Five reasons why you should buy an Australian SIM card before you leave home

  1. You can give everyone your Australian number before you leave home. If you wait until you get to Australia you can easily spend $10-20 in credit phoning friends and family to tell them your new Australian number.
  2. You can divert your home phone to your Australian mobile before you travel so you don’t miss a call.
  3. You can print your Australian mobile phone number on stationery – essential if you’re travelling on business.
  4. You can put your Australian mobile phone number on your CV so you can start looking for work before you arrive in Australia.
  5. If you have friends meeting you at the airport, if you give them your Australian number in advance they can phone you if they have trouble finding you at the airport.

FAQ

Will the SIM card work in my mobile phone?

The Just Prepaid Mobile SIM card will work in any unlocked GSM mobile phone that operates at the 900Mhz and 1800Mhz bands. This includes virtually all dual-band mobile phones from Europe and the UK.
How do I know if my phone is locked?

Before you travel put the Just Mobile SIM (or any other SIM that’s not from your regular mobile network) into your phone and turn it on. If your phone shows a network name it is unlocked, if it says something like “Network locked” or “SIM locked” then your phone is locked into your home network.

How can I unlock my phone?

If you’re still in the UK it is relatively easy to unlock your phone. If you are on a contract you can simply call up your regular mobile network’s customer service and ask them to unlock your phone. This will usually involve them giving you a code, which you enter into your phone to unlock it and make it compatible with SIM cards from all networks. Many networks will do this free of charge if you are a good customer, but some networks may charge you for this service. Alternatively you can go to a small independent mobile phone shop and pay them around £10 to get your phone unlocked (larger mobile phone shops may not offer this service but most small independent shops will).

It is more difficult if you are already in Australia, as many Australian mobile phone shops don’t know how to unlock phones, especially phones on a foreign network. However there are several websites where you can generate codes to unlock your phone. These sites include Trycktill and Unlock it Free. If you are in Australia you can also try making an international call to your home mobile company to get an unlocking code, but occasionally you need to be calling from within that network’s coverage area (depending on your mobile network at home).

You can read more about unlocking your mobile phone here.

Do I need to activate my SIM card?

The SIM card needs to be activated within a week or so of us selling it.

When we ship your SIM card to you, we also email you all the information you need to activate the SIM. It’s a simple process that involves filling out a form on the Just Prepaid Mobile website.

You will need to provide your passport number, passport expiry date, date of birth and your address in Australia in order to activate your SIM. Unfortunately there is no way around providing this personal information as it is a requirement for all mobile networks in Australia, but you have the option of doing this directly with Just Mobile if you prefer not to give these details to us.

Please note that once your SIM card has been activated you have 30 days before you top up your credit. It is usually best to wait until a couple of weeks before your departure date before ordering your SIM.

What countries can I call for 39c (≈ 21p) per minute?

The Just Prepaid Mobile (on the Just 15 Prepaid plan) lets you phone over 100 countries (including the UK) for just 39c (≈ 21p) per minute. The complete list of countries is: Andorra, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Cook Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Fiji, Finland, Macedonia (FYROM), France, French Guyana, French Polynesia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guadeloupe, Guam, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kiribati, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Malta, Martinique, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Nauru, Nepal, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Samoa (American), San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, St Pierre et Miquelon, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tonga, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Vatican City, Venezuela, Vietnam, Western Samoa and Zimbabwe.

Which is the best plan? The Just 15 Prepaid plan or the Prepaid Cap?

Unless you are confident that you will be making a lot of calls (particularly calls to other Just and Vodafone mobile phones), it is recommended that you start out on the Just 15 Prepaid Plan and upgrade to a Prepaid Cap if you find that you will be regularly spending more than $30 on calls within a month.

The Prepaid Cap is a good way to control your spending, but you need to bear in mind that the call charges on the Prepaid Cap are at least double what you would pay on the basic Just 15 Prepaid Plan.

How do I change between the Just 15 Prepaid plan and the Prepaid Cap plan?

Which plan you are on depends on which top-up voucher you buy.

If you buy a $15, $20, $30, $50 or $100 top-up voucher, you will be on the Just 15 Prepaid Cap.

If you buy a $19, $29 or $39 top-up voucher, you will be on the $19 Prepaid Cap, $29 Prepaid Cap or $39 Prepaid Cap.

You can simply change between these plans by buying a different top-up voucher when you next need to top up your credit.

It is best to wait until you have used all your credit before switching across to a different plan as your remaining credit can not be transfered between the Just 15 Prepaid plan and the Prepaid Cap plan.

How long will it take to get my SIM card?

If we have SIM cards in stock we can usually post your SIM card the same day we receive your order (except on weekends, bank holidays or if we get your order in the evening after the post office has closed), if we are out of stock it may take up to a week longer before we can ship your SIM Card.

The SIM cards are posted from Australia. Australia Post quotes delivery times to the UK of around one week, but we have had reports that delivery has taken up to two weeks. We advise that you should ship to an address in Australia if you are planning on travelling in less than two weeks.

If you are travelling shortly, we can post your SIM card to an address in Australia (such as your hotel) so it is waiting for you when you arrive. If we post to an Australian address we can email you your Australian phone number so you know your number before you travel.

How much will it cost people to call me?

The cost of calling depends on your phone company’s rate to Australian mobiles. For calls from the UK, BT charge 29.36p to 51.38p per minute plus an 8p call connection charge (the charges vary according to which calling plan you have with BT). Other phone companies may be cheaper and you can reduce the cost by using a service like Rebtel (USD 16c per minute plus the cost of a local call) or by using Skype (13.3p per minute) or Vonage (8p per minute).

Does this SIM card work outside Australia?

No. I’m sorry but the Just Prepaid Mobile SIM card only works within Australia.

Does this SIM card let me access the internet?

No. I’m sorry but the Just Prepaid Mobile SIM card only only lets you make voice calls and SMS text messages.
